The longest cave system in Slovakia

The Demänovská cave system is the longest in Slovakia with a length of more than 40 kilometres. It was formed over millions of years by the underground river Demänovka. Two of the most important caves are open to the public today, each offering a completely different but equally unforgettable experience:

The Demänovská Cave of Freedom has long been one of the most visited caves in Slovakia. It will amaze you with its incredibly rich and colourful stalactite decorations, mysterious underground river and clear emerald lakes.

The Demänovská Ice Cave is located just a short distance down the valley. It is one of the most historically significant caves in Europe - the first written mention of it dates back to 1672. In addition to the fascinating underground spaces with massive sinter decorations, you will also find an authentic atmosphere that people have been discovering here for centuries. Signatures of important personalities of Slovak history are still preserved on the walls.

How far are the caves from the hotel?

How to get to the caves?

Thanks to the great accessibility from our hotel (more info at www.hoteljasna.sk), you have several options to plan this trip:

🚗 By car: the drive down the valley is very easy and quick. There are paid parking lots below both caves. From the parking lot you have to climb up the forest path to the Cave of Freedom (about 400 m, about 15 minutes), to the Ice Cave is a bit longer.(about 600 m, about 20 minutes) - on both routes you will find a nature trail, so the ascent has also an educational value.

🚌 By bus. The bus stops are very close to the hotel and the bus drops you off right at the parking lots of both caves (Demänovská dolina, Jaskyňa slobody or Ľadová jaskyňa stops).

🚲 By bike: for more active guests, the descent from Jasná to the caves is a pleasant refreshment and an excellent tip for a bike trip. You can safely lock your bike right at the start of the ascent trails.
